ABOUT THE DEBATE UNION

For more than 50 years, the Claremont Colleges Debate Union (CCDU) has been a leader in forensics education. The Debate Union continues to provide the most innovative and diverse competitive, professional, public events, and community service and educational outreach programming of any college debate society. The CCDU is a five-college program. Programming is both co-curricular and extra-curricular (students may receive credit for participation.)

This is the official website of the CCDU. It will provide most of the information you might need regarding the Debate Union's mission, programming, tournament and events calendars, participants, and contacts.

The CCDU is extraordinarily active in national and international intercollegiate debating. In the past 3 years, for example, CCDU members attended more than 130 tournaments and conferences, including more than 25 international events in Italy, the Czech Republic, Serbia and Montenegro, the United Kingdom, Canada, Korea, Croatia, South Africa, Slovakia, Chile, Turkey, and China. During that time, students also participated in scores of public debates, roundtable discussions, educational outreach and public speaking events. The Debate Union consistently ranks among the top competitors in the US – CCDU students have won three national debate championships and many hundreds of additional national and international debate and public speaking honors.

CCDU students support peer and secondary school student and teacher training in outreach programs. More than 5,000 secondary school students will participate in current programs. In addition, the Debate Union is supporting the establishment of a number of new college debate programs throughout California. To support the promotion of regional debating, the CCDU hosts more than a dozen conferences and tournaments on campus annually.

The Debate Union provides considerable resource support for student organizations and academic presentations, including campus seminars, public speaking materials, and guides for the successful integration of visual aids in oral presentations. The CCDU makes available student volunteers for class and community demonstration speeches and debates and provides moderators for open forums, roundtable discussions, and town hall meetings.

The Claremont Colleges Debate Union is committed to diverse and challenging programming; new programming is initiated each year. If you are interested in participating in CCDU or outreach programs, please contact us at your convenience. Meeting and tournament schedules for Claremont Colleges students for Spring 2005 are available on the website.
